LED Light Bulbs
Although the initial investment in LED bulbs may prove a bitter pill to swallow, in some cases purchasing LED light bulbs might well represent a lifetime investment as they last for up to 50,000 hours! We’re talking about use that might extend into decades, whereas the old incandescent lamps we were used to made their excuses and went out with a bang after only 1,000 hours. Such a comparison can only give put a smile on your face when it comes to LED light bulbs. LED’s main rival for energy-efficiency is the fluorescent lamp, but even that struggles to keep apace. Fluorescent lamps tend to be cheaper – in many ways they’re the in-between option - but they still typically draw twice the wattage of the power-sipping LED bulb and they use not-very-eco-friendly mercury to boot. You can dispose of an LED light easily by just chucking it in the bin, because it isn’t hazardous.
LED lighting is also a solid-state form of illumination, which makes it robust in the extreme. It’s shockproof and it’s vibration proof. It also doesn’t work overtime producing heat, so unlike a halogen bulb you can touch it after much use with no sizzling effect.
LED bulbs are so low-powered that they also partner well with solar lighting solutions. Increasingly they’re being used in outdoor fixtures in conjunction with a solar panel and solar-rechargeable batteries.
Having made a compelling case for the technology, what about the types of available LED bulb? They’re available in all shapes and sizes, and often in a variety of colours too! You’ll find candle bulbs, low voltage spotlights and GU10s, golfballs and GLS bulbs, LED PAR lights, Double D bulbs, T8 tubes and capsules. Just about everywhere you currently have an incandescent lamp might be more economically served by an LED replacement.
Low Voltage LED Drivers
If you’re considering low voltage MR16 or MR11 LED reflectors you’ll also need to install an LED driver. These are the LED equivalent of a 12V transformer, distinguished by a more accurately regulated current - LEDs are sensitive to fluctuations in voltage - and a low or non-existent minimum wattage. Lyco offer a choice of LED drivers.
Return on your investment
So energy-efficient are LED bulbs that you’ll likely see a return on your initial investment within a short space of time. With their incredible lifespans, businesses will also save costs on maintenance.
